Introducing pricing updates to free and monthly subscription plans in Labelbox

Note: Labelbox teams can expect to see these updates on their billing starting March 1st. Please check the Usage tab in Settings to see the reflected LBU updates.

Effective February 1, 2024, Labelbox is introducing a new pricing structure for our free and monthly subscription plans in an effort to bring more clarity and transparency to customers.

With this update, Labelbox will continue leaning towards a data-first pricing model by enabling teams to upload larger datasets at a lower cost and take full advantage of our end-to-end AI platform, including Labelbox Catalog, Labelbox Annotate, and Labelbox Model during their journey to build intelligent applications.

This update will simplify pricing calculations to make it easier for AI builders to understand and forecase their Labelbox usage costs.

Summary of what’s changing

Here is a quick summary of the major changes that will be introduced in this update:

  • Teams will no longer have to delete data from Labelbox to reduce costs — recurring Labelbox Unit (LBU) charges for Labelbox Annotate and Labelbox Model will be eliminated
  • To enable more teams to take advantage of labeling automation, the per-unit LBU charge per data row in Labelbox Model will be reduced
  • Teams can ingest higher volumes of data into Labelbox at lower costs — the per-unit LBU charge per data row in Labelbox Catalog will be reduced
  • To increase transparency and make reporting and forecasting easier, LBUs will be charged at a flat rate
  • Free LBU usage will only be offered on the Free plan

Overall, these changes are intended to provide simplicity and transparency for pricing within the Labelbox platform as we lean toward a more data-centric pricing model. Check out the rest of the blog post for more details on specific changes and updates to our Free and Starter plans.

How LBU consumption will change across Labelbox products

The new pricing structure introduces the following key changes to the Labelbox Unit (LBU) consumption model for account holders on the Free or Monthly subscription plans.

See pricing table below for the complete overview of LBU consumption per data rows.

LBU consumption for Annotate

The cost of Annotate will now be a one-time charge of one LBU per datarow for common data types. This will reduce the cost of keeping labeled data in Labelbox over time and eliminate the need for customers to remove labeled data in order to reduce LBU consumption.

LBU consumption for Model

The cost of Labelbox Model will now be a one-time charge of one LBU per five data rows for common data types. This will lower the cost of data rows with model predictions by up to 80% for teams taking full advantage of Labelbox Model. Similar to LBU consumption for Labelbox Annotate, this change will reduce the cost of keeping data in Labelbox over time.

LBU consumption for Catalog

The monthly cost of data in Catalog will be one LBU per sixty data rows for common data types. This will significantly lower the cost of keeping data in Labelbox over time.

For LBU consumption information for complex data types, check the pricing table below.

Introducing a flat LBU rate for monthly subscription plans

The cost calculation for all monthly subscription plans will be based on a flat rate of $0.10 per LBU. This update will make it easier to calculate your monthly bill and anticipate future expenses.

Please note that customers on paid plans will no longer have access to free LBUs. This is due to our goal to better match plans to value. Volume discounts will be available for customers based on annual commitment of LBU consumption on the Enterprise plan.

500 free LBUs for Free plan

The Free plan will now offer 500 LBUs per month across all Labelbox products. The free LBUs will only be available to those on the Free plan, and will be consumed according to the usage guidelines outlined in the rate table below.

LBU rate table

The following LBU rate table will take effect on February 1, 2024:

Examples of usage of the Labelbox platform

Below are two sample scenarios to show how the new pricing structure will work.

Example #1: Data labeling with model-assisted pre-labeling

For a team with 1000 images to be labeled, half of which have pre-labels generated by Foundry, the LBU charges for using Labelbox will be as follows:

  • Annotate: 1000 LBU for 1000 labeled data rows, charged only once
  • Model: 100 LBU for 500 data rows with a prediction, charged only once
  • Catalog: 17 LBU per month for 1000 data rows (or 200 LBU annually)

If all of this activity takes places in the same billing period, the team would consume 1117 LBU during that period, and 1.67 LBU for every month thereafter while the data remains in Labelbox Catalog. If the data is kept in Labelbox for one year, it will cost the team 45% less to store under the new pricing structure.

New Pricing = 1,117 LBU ($118) + 1.67 LBU/month ($1.70/month) = $138/year

Example #2: Data curation and labeling with data enrichment

For a team with 60,000 images all enriched with predictions from Foundry, and only 10,000 images are labeled, the LBU charges for using Labelbox will be as follows:

  • Catalog: 1,000 LBU per month for 60,000 data rows (or 12,000 LBU annually)
  • Model: 12,000 LBU for 60,000 data rows with a prediction, charged only once
  • Annotate: 10,000 LBU for 10,000 labeled data rows, charged only once

If all of this activity takes place in the same billing period, the team would consume 23,000 LBU (or $2,300) during that period, and only 1000 LBU (or $100) for every month thereafter while the data remains in Labelbox Catalog. Over the course of a year, this works out to be $3,400 in LBU consumption costs.

New Pricing: $3,400 = $2,200 one time charge + $100/mo x 12 months

* Note: Pricing examples are for LBU consumption only. Additional cost for model compute and/or Boost services may vary.
